Abstract
943,388. Stuffing-box substitutes. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 6, 1962 [Sept. 25, 1961], No. 34214/62. Heading F2B. A seal ring 10, particularly for use between the movable and stationary parts of a tiltable jet propulsion nozzle, comprises two annular spaced beads 14 having a helical wrapping or carcass 12 of cord 20 of heat-resistant plastics material forming superposed layers 16, 18, and an elastomer coating 38 impregnating the cord and the beads. The wrapping 12 is bonded to a liner 40 having sealing lips 42 adjacent the beads. Each bead 14 is formed from a continuous cord which is made from spirally-wound smaller cords and has its ends joined together to form an annulus. The carcass 12 may be two ply or any multiple of two plies and may be formed from a single continuous strand or a number of continuous strands positioned sideby-side and helically wound simultaneously. As shown, the carcass is two ply and is formed by first spacing the beads axially and then winding the cord 20 helically around the beads to form the top and bottom layers 16 and 18, the abutting ends 34, 36 of the cord being tied or otherwise secured together. The cord turns and the beads are then impregnated with the elastomer 38, which may be silicone rubber, and finally bonded to the liner 40 which may also be of silicone rubber. The seal is then bent to the shape shown. The liner 40 may be on either or both sides of the carcass or omitted altogether.
