Abstract
An artificial tooth comprises a metal base having a coefficient of expansion between 80 and 170 X 10-7 per degree Centrigrade and, attached to it, a porcelain covering having a coefficient of expansion slightly less than that of the metal base. This avoids the porcelain being placed under tension when the tooth is cooled to normal temperatures. In one method of making such a tooth, the porcelain shell is first formed and the metal is cast into it and it is possible to do this in such a way that oxidization of the metal does not occur and a secure bond is obtained without any discolouration. In order to obtain the desired coefficient of expansion of the porcelain, two components are prepared, one comprising high orthoclase felspar and the other comprising ordinary clear felspar and silica, the relative proportions of which bear a direct relation to the coefficient of expansion of the resulting porcelain.
