Abstract

942,635. Welding by fusion. HACKETHALDRAHT-UND KABEL-WERKE A.G. April 18, 1962 [April 18, 1961 (2)], No. 15149/62. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H2] Arc welding apparatus used in the manufacture of metallic sheathing for electric cables wherein a metallic strip is shaped into a tube and the seam continuously welded comprises a generator A the output of which is linearly dependent upon the speed of the seam being welded relative to the welding electrode, the output of the armature G of the generator A being used to bias an inductor I in the supply to the welding electrode so that the welding current is linearly proportional to the speed of the seam. Closure of a mains switch St starts the mechanism for moving the tube which mechanism drives the generator A and after a delay sufficient to the tube moving mechanism to reach the minimum working speed a timing relay Z 1 closes a switch S to supply the welding electrode over a transformer T, the inductor I and a rectifier R. Energization of the field of the generator A is effected by the transformer T over a rectifier R 1 and a potential divider comprising resistors 1, 2, 5 the resistor 5 being adjustable to allow the minimum setting of the welding current consistent with the minimum speed of the tube. A resistor 3 is provided in the biasing circuit of the inductor I to allow for the type of material being welded. A second timing relay Z 2 is provided whereby a resistor 4 in the field energization circuit is short circuited after the current surge incident upon the start of welding has passed. In a second embodiment the relay Z 2 is controlled by means of a photo-cell which is responsive to the arc. The rectifier R is omitted in an A.C. arc system.
