Abstract
An alkali-metal catalysed rubber-forming organopolysiloxane is stabilized by intimately dispensing a minor amount of a bromoalkane of the formula: <FORM:0942624/C3/1> wherein R is H, or a monovalent hydrocarbon or halo-hydrocarbon radical having up to 4 C atoms, throughout the siloxane and heating the mixture to a temperature within the range of 50 DEG to 250 DEG C. The convertible siloxanes used may contain Si-bonded hydrocarbon (saturated or unsaturated), halohydrocarbon or cyanoalkyl radicals or terminal OH groups, as described in U.S.A. Specifications 2,448,556, 2,448,756, 2,457,688, 2,484,595, 2,490,357, 2,521,528, 2,541,137 and 2,843,555. The bromoalkane is generally added in an amount sufficient to provide at least 6 atoms of bromine per atom of alkali-metal based on the equivalent weight of the alkali-metal catalyst used in the polymerization. In Examples, 1,2,3-tri-bromopropane was used to stabilise a KOH-equilibrated dimethylpolysiloxane. U.S.A. Specifications 2,567,110, 2,739,952 and 2,789,109 also are referred to.
