Abstract
Silica sand is coated with a liquid composition of a modified phenol aldehyde or phenol-ligninaldehyde resin, wax and hexamethylene tetramine, by the hot mulling process, and used to make shell moulds. The resins (see Division C3) are modified by incorporation of one or more of rosin, copal, shellac, or a coumarone and/or indene resin, during their manufacture.ALSO:In a liquid composition containing by weight 65-85% resin solids, 7-12% free phenol and 4-8% water, the resin solids conprise (1) An A-stage phenol-formaldehyde or phenol-lignin formaldehyde condensate with which additional methylol groups have been introduced, and (11) a modifier which is one or more of rosin, copal shellac, and a coumarone and/or indene resin; the amount of lignin not exceeding 50% of the lignin plus phenol; the amount of resinous modifier being not more than 30%, and the amount of lignin plus resin modifier being not more than 50% of phenol plus resin plus lignin. The compositions are particularly useful for coating sand to be used in shell moulding. Part of the resin modifier may be reacted with the phenolaldehyde or phenol-lignin-aldehyde condensate during the introduction of extra methylol groups in the initial condensate. The lignin is used in finely divided powder form. Hexamethylene-tetramine is added to the compositions as a curing agent and wax as a lubricant. The compositions may be thinned if necessary with an alcohol or ketone. In examples (1) phenol is condensed with formaldehyde at a pH of 1 and a temperature not exceeding 70 DEG C.; the pH is adjusted to 7, further formalin added and condensation continued at 80 DEG C. During this second stage rosin is mixed in. The resinous product is washed and water distilled in vacuo to yield a product with 83-85% resin solids, 10-11% phenol and 5-6% water. (2) A coumarone resin is used in place of rosin, and methanol is added to the final composition. (3) Lignin is included in the initial phenol-aldehyde condensation, and rosin is used as modifier. (4) is similar to (3) using a coumarone resin as modifier and with addition of methanol to the final composition. The products of the above examples were mixed with sand, hexamethylene tetramine and wax and used to form shell moulds the hot and cold strengths of which were measured and compared with those of moulds from an ordinary phenol-formaldehyde resin.
