Abstract
Aldehydes and aromatic hydrocarbons are condensed in the presence of an acid or a Friedel-Craft catalyst, water formed during the reaction being removed by azeotropic distillation. The hydrocarbons have 1-3 aromatic rings, at least one of the rings carrying 1-4 C1C4 alkyl groups. durene is a preferred reactant. The reaction temperature is 75-212 DEG F. 1-20%, based on the total charge, of azeotroping agent are added, suitable agents being chlorinated hydrocarbons, saturated hydrocarbons, ethers, and aromatic hydrocarbons. Benzene is the preferred agent. Pressures up to 500 psig. may be used, and the reaction may be continuous, semi-continuous or batch. The aromatic/aldehyde ratio may be 5:1-1:5, preferably 2:1-1:2, 0.2-20% catalyst based on total charge weight being used. A suitable continuous process is described in some detail, and examples are given of several batch processes.
