Abstract

941,735. Motor vehicle hydraulic steering and driving gear. R. C. PEARSON. Feb. 12, 1962 [May 18, 1961], No. 18238/61. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] In an hydrostatic transmission, for a wheeled or tracked vehicle, comprising a pump or pump set 2 supplying two variable displacement motors or motor sets 21, 22 in parallel, each controlled by an hydraulic jack 30 or 31 responsive to pressure in the high pressure fluid supply line above a predetermined pressure, steering control is effected by reducing the effect of the hydraulic pressure on one jack to reduce the displacement of the corresponding motor. Prime mover 1 drives reversible pump 2 with interchangeable supply and return lines 15, 16 to the motors, boost pump 3 supplying pump servo control valve 5 and the required minimum pressure to jacks 30, 31 through line 13 and pump 4 maintaining the fluid circuit full. Shuttle or equivalent valves 41 and 60 respectively maintain line 42 at the higher pressure of lines 15 and 16, and the inlet ports 108, 109 of steering valve 45 at the higher pressure of lines 13 and 42. In the neutral position of steering valve 45 this high fluid pressure is supplied through lines 48, 49, change-over valve 50 and lines 142, 143 to the jacks 30, 31. The positions of the pistons 34 which have damping holes 36 is determined by the balance of the fluid pressure on the larger area side of the piston on the one hand and the spring load and fluid pressure on the smaller piston rod side of the piston on the other hand. Increase in line pressure moves the pistons to increase the motor displacement. Downward movement of lever 43 to steer the vehicle moves frame 47 and valve spool 44 downwards when first pressure port 109 is cut off from line 48 by land 120 and then line 48 and jack 30 are connected with outlet port 110 and hence line 14 and reservoir 11. The resulting reduction in pressure in jack 30 allows the spring to move the piston to reduce the motor displacement. " Feel " is provided at lever 43 by springs 63, 64 and the difference in pressures in chambers 152, 153 acting on the spool 44, the chambers 152, 153 communicating through passages 150, 151 with the lines 48, 49. Change-over valve 50 is connected between lines 15, 16 so that when the pressure differential between lines 15, 16 is reversed, as when the transmission changes from the drive condition to the over-run condition, the connections between lines 48, 49 and the jacks are reversed so that the steering effect is not reversed. Specifications 902,185 and 941,737 are referred to.
