Abstract

Carbon particles maintained electrically at above 1300 DEG C. are fluidized by the passage of a gas containing methane, whence C is deposited on the particles of the bed and hydrogen is recovered. The resulting carbon particles maintained electrically at 700-1500 DEG C. are then fluidized by the passage of a gas containing elemental sulphur vapour. The methane feed gas, e.g. natural gas, may be passed through a vertically mounted cylindrical reactor, of e.g. a high-temperature resistant glass, containing previously calcined and screened petroleum coke particles, the overflow coke being subsequently bled off. Carbon disulphide is produced by subsequently passing a stream of sulphur vapour at 900-1200 DEG C. through the bed. The reaction may be carried out in separate zones, the excess of carbon produced in one zone by decomposition of CH4 being transferred to the other for reaction with S, or, alternatively, by a discontinuous process in the same zone whereby CH4 is decomposed to deposit C, and S is then passed through the bed to remove an amount of C equivalent to that deposited on the particles of the bed by the CH4. In the separate zone process a supplemental supply of C may be added to the second zone or excess C from the first zone may be removed entirely from the two-zone system. Specification 833,562 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 833,562.
