Abstract

Carbonated basic alkaline earth metal or magnesium sulphonates having high alkaline reserve are prepared by heating an alkaline earth metal or magnesium salt of a hydrocarbon-oil soluble organic sulphonic acid with the hydroxide of an alkaline earth metal or magnesium in the presence of urea at a temperature of from 100 to 400 DEG F., the mol ratio of said hydroxide to said sulphonate being in the range of from 1:1 to 10:1 and the urea being present in an amount of from 0.025 to 1.5 mols per equivalent of said metal hydroxide. The reaction is preferably carried out in a hydrocarbon lubricating oil medium, the lubricating oil, metal sulphonate, metal hydroxide and urea preferably being blended together and then heated and filtered. The organic sulphonates preferably contain from 12 to 70 carbon atoms, several being specified. The products may be used in lubricating oil compositions (see Division C5). In examples: (2) and (3) a lubricating oil concentrate of a calcium petroleum sulphonate, a naphthenic base oil, an aqueous slurry of calcium hydroxide, and urea are heated and the product filtered; (4)-(9) and (11) are similar to (2) but use a paraffinic, in place of a naphthenic, base oil and solid calcium hydroxide without water, an autoclave being used in some cases; (10) and (12) are similar to (4) but have no added base oil; (13) is similar to (2) but uses barium, instead of calcium, petroleum sulphonate. Other examples describe: (1) a process similar to (2) omitting the urea; (14) preparation of basic barium sulphonate; (15) preparation of basic carbonated calcium sulphonate using carbon dioxide as the carbonating agent. Many suitable sulphonate starting material and oils are specified.ALSO:Lubricating oil compositions having large alkaline reserves are obtained by incorporating in the oil carbonated basic alkaline earth metal or magnesium sulphonates prepared by heating an alkaline earth metal or magnesium salt of a hydrocarbon-oil soluble organic sulphonic acid with the hydroxide of an alkaline earth metal or magnesium in the presence of urea at a temperature of from 100 DEG to 400 DEG F. (see Division C2). The lubricating oil compositions are preferably obtained by preparing the basic alkaline earth metal or magnesium sulphonates in the presence of the lubricating oil. Numerous sulphonates are exemplified, including petroleum sulphonates. Specified types of lubricating oils are hydrocarbon lubricating oils, alkylene polymers, polymers of alkylene oxides and esters of dicarboxylic acids, polymers of silicon, and aromatic type oils, e.g. polyphenyls and alkylphenyl diethers. Examples are given in which the oil is a paraffinic or naphthenic base oil. Other additives referred to are zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate, zinc di(alkylphenyl) dithiophosphate, and an alkyl methacrylatevinyl pyrollidone copolymer.
