Diolefins are polymerized using a catalyst solution prepared by reacting a hydrocarbon soluble cobalt or nickel salt or complex with an organo-aluminium compound and at least 50 mols of a diolefin hydrocarbon per mol of said salt or complex in presence of a hydrocarbon solvent before the catalyst solution is used for polymerization. In examples, butadiene is polymerized with catalyst solutions prepared from CoCl 2 . 2C 5 H 5 N, Et 2 AlCl. and butadiene.
