In the absence of the recording medium at a receiving teleprinter means is provided for indicating that absence to the transmitter. In a first embodiment, the calling procedure includes the transmission of a " who are you? " signal. The receiver normally responds by identifying itself to the transmitter, but if the recording medium is absent the answer-back transmitter is taken out of circuit and replaced by a transmitter which sends to the calling teleprinter a signal indicative of the fault. However, the fault may occur during normal transmission so to confirm that the message has been received correctly the transmitter sends the " who are you? " signal at the end of the message. If a fault has developed the transmitter is informed in the same manner as indicated above. In a second embodiment no WRU signal is transmitted, but the answer-back transmitter is energized upon coincidence of the commencement of a message and the detection of the absence of the recording medium to send a signal which stops the message transmitter.
