A photographic type-composing machine comprises a font plate from which characters are photographed, a control device having control elements whose heights represent the widths of the corresponding characters on the font plate, a ratchet drivable in one direction by a pawl, an adjustable stop to limit the movement of the pawl relative to the ratchet so as to control the extent of the driving movement of the pawl, means for adjusting the position of the stop in accordance with the height of the control element for the selected character, and a gearbox coupling the ratchet to a movable magazine whereby regular spacing between characters in a line is obtained, the transmission ratio of the gearbox being changed to alter this spacing. As shown. a character font plate 21 bearing upper and lower case symbols in separate rows is mounted on a double carriage movable along rails 22, 23 so that any chosen character may be positioned for projection by a lens in the tube 88 on to a film in a camera magazine 83. On depressing a handle 36 the plate 21 is latched by the action of a cam 38 on a lever 29 which engages a rack 26 on the font plate, the camera shutter is opened to record the chosen character, and a rod 50 is moved into contact with a pin 27 associated with the chosen character and of a height appropriate to the character width. The extent of the movement of the rod transmitted through a parallel rod 41, bellcrank lever 39, and link 44 controls the angle through which a stop plate 45 for a pair of driving pawls 56 is moved clockwise about a ratchet wheel 46. On further depression of the handle 36 lever 36<SP>1</SP> via link 53, bell crank lever 51, and link 54 moves clockwise a bell crank lever 55 carrying the driving pawls 56 idly round the ratchet wheel 46 into engagement with the stop plate 45. On releasing the handle 36, the parts are spring-returned to the Fig. 1 position whereby the pawls 56 drive the ratchet wheel 46. A gearbox (Fig. 6, not shown) is arranged between the shaft of the wheel 46 and a rack drive for the magazine carriage, the chosen gear ratio being selected by levers 62 which move idler gears into engagement with the driven and driving gears which are of stepped form. By rotating the knob 84 the film may be wound up for interline spacing.
