Abstract

A latex coating composition stabilized against microbial degradation comprises a latex coating having incorporated therein microbicidal amounts of a nitroamine having the general formula <FORM:0939777/IV(a)/1> where R is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or the radical -CH2R2, R1 is hydrogen or methyl or ethyl, R2 is a morpholino or piperidyl group or the radical -N(R3)2 or -NHR3 and R3 may be hydrogen, an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or tetrahydrofurfuryl group, the alkyl and hydroxyalkyl groups having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The nitroamine may be present in an amount of from 10 p.p.m. to 5,000 p.p.m. Pigments, buffers, thickeners, pigment dispersers, emulsifiers and stabilizers may be incorporated in the coating. The nitroamines can be incorporated with the pigments &c. or they can be blended directly with the formulated coating composition in the form of a solution. The examples refer to styrene-butadiene latices. Nitroamines mentioned are 2-methyl, 2-nitro-1,3-dimorpholinopropane; 2-methyl-2 nitro-1,3-dipiperidylpropane; 2-methyl-2-nitro-1,3-bis-(2-hydroxypropylamino) propane; 2-methyl-2-nitro-1,3-dibutylaminopropane; 2-nitro-1-tetrahydrofurfurylaminopropane; N-(2-nitrobutyl) morpholine; N-(2-nitrobutyl) piperidine; 2-methyl-2-nitro-1-(2-hydroxypropylamino) propane; N-(2-nitrobutyl) dodecylamine; 2-ethyl-2-nitro-1,3-dimorpholino propane and 2-methyl-2-nitro-1,3-bis(dibutylamino)-propane.
