Abstract

Aqueous compositions for sizing glass fibre filaments comprise a synthetic latex made by the emulsion polymerization of an ethylenic monomer, an alkenyl acyloxy silane, a textile softener for glass fibre filaments and a trialkoxy silyl alkylamine other than gammaaminopropyl triethoxy silane. Specified latices are polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride and polystyrene. The alkenyl acyloxy silane may be vinyl triacetoxy silane, vinyl diacetoxy propionoxy silane, vinyl acetoxy dipropionoxy silane, allyl triacetoxy silane, vinyl tributyroxy silane, vinyl tripropionoxy silane, allyl diacetoxy propionoxy silane, allyl acetoxy dipropionoxy silane, allyl tripropionoxy silane and vinyl trimonochloracetoxy silane. The textile softener may be an acid solubilized fatty acid amide, e.g. pelargonic acid amide solubilized with acetic acid, or an alkyl imidazoline derivative, e.g. the reaction product of tetraethylene pentamine and stearic acid. The trialkoxy silyl alkylamine may be gamma-aminopropyl trimethoxy silane, gamma-aminopropyl tripropoxy silane, betaaminopropyl triethoxy silane, bis(triethoxy silyl propyl) amine, tris(triethoxy silyl propyl) amine, bis(tripropoxy silyl propyl) amine or gammaaminopropyl tributoxy silane. The sizing compositions may also comprise wetting agents, particularly cationic or non-ionic wetting agents, and melamine-formaldehyde condensates. The compositions may be applied to glass fibre strands before twisting, plying and weaving, particularly where the fibres are to be used for reinforcing polyester or epoxy resins, e.g. in the preparation of laminates.ALSO:Strands of glass fibre filaments are sized before twisting, plying and weaving, by applying thereto aqueous compositions comprising a synthetic latex made by emulsion polymerization of an ethylenic monomer, an alkenyl acyloxy silane, a textile softener for glass fibre filaments and a trialkoxy silyl alkylamine other than gamma-aminopropyl triethoxy silane, and drying. Specified latices are of polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride and polystyrene. Specified alkenyl silanes are vinyl triacetoxy silane, vinyl diacetoxy propionoxy silane, vinyl acetoxy dipropionoxy silane, allyl triacetoxy silane, vinyl tributyroxy silane, vinyl tripropionoxy silane, allyl diacetoxy propionoxy silane, allyl acetoxy dipropionoxy silane, allyl tripropionoxy silane, and vinyl trimonochloracetoxy silane. Specified textile softeners are pelargonic acid amide solubilized with acetic acid, and the reaction product of tetraethylene pentamine and stearic acid. Specified trialkoxy silyl alkylamines are gamma-aminopropyl trimethoxy silane, gamma-aminopropyl tripropoxy silane, beta aminopropyl triethoxy silane, bis (triethoxy silyl propyl)amine, tris(triethoxy silyl propyl)amine, bis(tripropoxy silyl propyl) amine, and gamma-aminopropyl tributoxy silane. The sized strands may be used for the fabrication of cloth, chopped strand mats and woven rovings for the reinforcement of polyester and epoxy resins, e.g. in the manufacture of laminates. The sizing compositions may also comprise wetting agents, particularly cationic or non-ionic wetting agents, and melamine-formaldehyde condensates.
