Abstract
In the production of alumina a silico-aluminous ore is roasted with ammonium sulphate, the roasted ore is lixiviated, the resulting solution is decanted and filtered, aluminium ammonium sulphate obtained from the solution is purified by removing iron and titanium salts and silica, and alumina is precipitated from a solution of the purified aluminium ammonium sulphate by means of ammonium hydroxide or sulphide. The solution resulting from lixiviation is cooled with agitation, after the addition of further ammonium sulphate if required, to crystallize out the aluminium ammonium sulphate leaving most of the iron and titanium impurities in solution. The crystals are redissolved in water and ammonium ferrocyanide and copper sulphate added to precipitate iron, which is filtered off, and the filtrate cooled to crystallize the aluminium ammonium sulphate. The crystals are melted in their water of crystallization, zinc sulphate is added to precipitate any remaining silica, the melt is separated from insoluble residue and reacted with ammonium hydroxide solution or ammonium sulphide, causing aluminium hydroxide to precipitate, and finally the precipitate is calcined. An example is given. Specification 737,904 is referred to.
