Abstract

939,049. Actuation of switches. D. BAAS. Nov. 17, 1961 [Nov. 24, 1960], No. 41298/61. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXI] An electric contact maker comprises a closed casing allowing entry of liquid and housing contact members held apart by a material which when moistened by liquid permits the establishment of an electric path between the members or the material is released so that the members move into electric contact. The casing 7, Fig. 1, may be a perforated sleeve of insulating material such as synthetic plastics or ceramics and filled with metal shavings enveloped by an insulating water-soluble skin, e.g. potato flour. In Fig. 3 the bared ends 12 of an interrupted conductor are embedded in an insulating water-soluble mass B, so that when water enters, the mass 13 decomposes and the circuit is completed. In the arrangement of Fig. 5, the tube 16 is solid walled and the ends of conductor 9 are connected to contact-plates 10, one plate 10 being electrically connected to a wire 18, which is also connected to a piston 17. When water enters through an inlet 19 and dissolves an adhesive immobilizing piston 17, the piston moves into contact with the second plate 10 and completes the circuit.
