939,048. Digital data storage apparatus. COMPAGNIE DES MACHINES BULL. Nov. 10, 1961 [Nov. 22, 1960], No. 40350/61. Class 106 (1). A buffer store, stated to be suitable for use in sorting blocks of data received from two input tapes for writing on two output tapes, comprises a matrix 5 of magnetic cores with 128 columns, each of six cores for storing a character, a decoder-selector 23 for selecting a desired column in accordance with an address number in one of three counting registers 17, 19, 21, and a cycle generator 15 enabling gates 12, 13, 14 in turn in each major cycle so that writing of characters into the buffer store matrix at consecutive addresses may proceed concurrently with read-out from different (but also consecutive) addresses. A control arrangement 11 programmes the entry from and read-out to tape, and also the read-out of block numbers (from columns 0-15) to a comparator 9. It provides pulses for counting up the column addresses in 17, 19, 21 and resetting them before an operation, and for reading-out of and into tape buffers 4, 6.
