Abstract
939,034. Extrusion presses. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. April 28, 1961 [Feb. 3, 1960], No. 3914/60. Class 83 (4). A metal extrusion press having a carrier which is rotatable to bring dies successively into operation has means for displacing the die carrier longitudinally along the centre-line of the press relative to the platen and billet container and means for longitudinally displacing, relative to the carrier, that die which lies on the centreline of the press. The carrier 34 and die 26 are movable axially together or in opposite directions to uncover a short length of the extruded article without axial movement of the container 16 to enable the discard to be sheared either in front of the die, Fig. 2, or behind it, Fig. 3. The carrier 34 is rotatable on a shaft 38 by a motor 40 through reduction gearing 42, the gear on the shaft being splined to permit axial movement of the shaft and carrier by two hydraulic actuators 44 and a cross-head 48 on the shaft end, the shaft assembly being carried by the platen 24. The shaft 38 is rotated when a second die 35 is to become operative, each die assembly 23 comprising a pressure ring 30, die-holder 28 and a bolster 32. A split distance-piece 36 (not shown) is insertable between the die-assembly and platen; it is in place during extrusion but is removed thereafter to enable axial movement of the die assembly towards the platen to be effected by two hydraulic actuators 54 carried within the platen. The piston-rods 56 of these actuators have forked ends whereby the heads of rods 58 attached to the die-holder are engaged to effect withdrawal of the die assembly 23 from the face of the container 16, as shown in Fig. 2, so that a saw 64 mounted on the press may be swung into position to sever the discard in front of the die, the container being then rotated in its carrier 20 about an axis 22 to bring another billet into alignment with the press axis whilst a motor-driven brush 74 cleans a container from which a discard has been ejected. If severing of the discard is to be effected behind the die assembly 23 the actuators 54 are operated to move die-holder 28 back towards the container, against compression springs 60, Fig. 3. The container itself is axially movable by means disclosed in Specification 904,593.
