Abstract

938,588. Knot-tying devices. B. W. BOURWALL. June 20, 1960 [June 19, 1959], No. 21574/60. Class 74 (2). Apparatus adapted to attach a reinforcing cord to the edge of a net comprises a tubular, part-circular, vertically disposed needle containing a spool of yarn and being revoluable about the axis of the circle, a horizontal worksupporting table arranged substantially at the axis of rotation, a member arranged beneath the table and initially positioned within the path of rotation of the needle with at least three pins projecting horizontally therefrom, the arrangement being such that the needle initially makes a revolution to pass the yarn around the cord and through a pair of superposed edge meshes on the table and around the pins, and a second revolution to pass the yarn again around the cord and pins, said member then being moved outwardly and tilted and the needle then making a further revolution to pass the yarn through the two turns supported on the pins, and means for stripping and tightening the knot thus formed. A tubular, part-circular needle 2 has a point 19 at one end and contains a spool 8 of yarn 9 which passes through gripping jaws 29 and issues from a plug 11 at the other end, a compression spring 26 being interposed between the plug and jaws. The needle is mounted in a frame 1 to rotate in a vertical plane, and is driven by rollers 7. A work-supporting table 17 is arranged at the axis of rotation. A plate 12 formed with a notch 12a is arranged under the table and is initially positioned within the path of rotation of the needle, when three pins 16 project horizontally from plate 12. The latter is fixed to an axle 13 connected by gearing to an axle 15, and the axles are adapted to be shifted axially by a rod 14. A reinforcing cord 16 and a pair of adjacent superposed edge meshes 16b of a net 16a are laid on the table 17 and the needle is rotated once to carry the yarn 9 over the cord, through the meshes and around the pins 21. The needle is then rotated a second time to carry the yarn over the cord and around the pins. Plate 12 is then moved outwardly in the direction of the screw 22 and is tilted to the position shown in broken lines. The needle is again rotated once and passes through the notch 12a to carry the yarn through the two turns supported on the pins 16. Plate 12 is then moved to the vertical position and is also moved transversely in the direction of the arrow 26, when the knot formed by the final revolution of the needle is stripped from the pins 16 by a fixed plate 27, and is tightened by the expansion of the spring 26 which has been compressed during the rotation of the needle. Further adjacent pairs of edge meshes are similarly secured in succession to the cord 16.
