Abstract

A process for reducing the particle size of a particulate material comprises subjecting to ultrasonic vibrations a suspension of the material in a chemically inert liquid in the presence of small chemically inert bodies. The suspension may be agitated by means of a hollow stirrer. The inert bodies may be glass beads or stainless steel balls. The inert liquid, which may contain a surface active agent, may be water, a volatile substantially anhydrous liquid e.g. benzene or ether or a solution of an ointment base e.g. petroleum jelly, in a volatile liquid. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a combination of an ultrasonic transducer and a vessel containing small inert bodies, the combination being arranged such that the inert bodies may be subjected to ultrasonic vibrations. The transducer may be attached to the base of a vessel containing the inert bodies. In an alternative, an inner vessel may contain the inert bodies and an outer vessel have the transducer attached thereto, the space between the vessels containing a liquid. In a further alternative, a probe with attached ultrasonic transducer may be inserted in a vessel containing the inert bodies. The apparatus may have inlet and outlet means so that it may be used on a continuous basis. Examples are described.ALSO:A process for disrupting cellular material comprises subjecting to ultrasonic vibrations a suspension of the material in a chemically inert liquid in the presence of small chemically inert bodies. The suspension may be agitated by means of a hollow stirrer. The inert bodies may be glass beads or stainless steel balls. The inert liquid, which may contain a surface-active agent, may be water, a volatile substantially anhydrous liquid, e.g. benzene or ether or a solution of an ointment base e.g. petroleum jelly, in a volatile liquid in which case after the process has been completed, the volatile solvent is easily removed to leave a highly dispersed suspension of the fine particles in the ointment base. Examples are described of the subdivision of procaine penicillin, a steroid, staphylococcus aureus, yeast and sulphur.
