Abstract
938,081. Pitot tubes. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. May 9, 1961 [June 18, 1960], No. 21488/60. Class 69 (1). Measurement of airspeed pitch and yaw in a rotary-wing aircraft is effected by a measuring device having in combination means for sensing pitot pressure, ambient static pressure and differential pitch and yaw pressure, respectively, with means for providing static pressure compensation. The device comprises a probe which protrudes three feet ahead of the aircraft fuselage and mounts a carrier 2 with a plug 3 on which is an axial member 4 with a nose-cap 5 which is electrically heated by a de-icing coil 16. In the nose-cap is an axial orifice 6 which senses pitot pressure and two other orifices 7 and 8 which are laterally offset at 40 degrees from the central axis and which sense the differential yaw and pitch pressure. An ellipsoidal fairing 11 between the plug 3 and the cap 5 has holes 12 equally spaced around its maximum diameter. The fairing is specially shaped so that the holes 12 are in a region of super-velocity and are subject to a pressure-ratio which is relatively insensitive both to flow direction and to Reynold's number and the static pressure inside it at 13 is at true ambient value. The orifices 6, 7 and 8 and the space 13 communicate by way of their respective pipes 9, 21, 22, and 14 with an external pressure union 10 from which operates a pitch or yaw meter 27. An altimeter 23 and a rate of climb meter 24 are connected with tube 14 by way of union 10. An air speed indicator 25 and an air mileage indicator 26 also are connected between the tubes 9 and 14 by the union 10.
