A slippable friction drive in a driving mechanism, (not shown), permits endless chains (one not shown), undergoing to-and-fro motion in the F and F<SP>1</SP> directions and each carrying a catch 48, Fig. 9, to " creep " a distance e equal to the thickness of one filter plate and its associated filter cloth after each single to-and-fro cycle. Such " creep " enables the catch 48 to engage lugs 51, 52 . . . of the filter plates and thus withdraw the plates to the left one at a time in succession, Fig. 10, after a mobile bearer plate 50 has been retracted in the F<SP>1</SP> direction (to the left) initially. When all the plates have been retracted, Fig. 11, an independent clutch-and-free-wheel device (not shown) is set to enable the chains to move (intermittently) in the F direction only (to the right), along a closed path, until the starting point, Fig. 9, is again reached. The mobile bearer plate 50 is then thrust in the F direction and presses the filter plates against a stationary bearer plate 54 so that filtering may be resumed.
