Abstract

Poly-alpha-methyl styrene is made by polymerizing alpha-methyl styrene at a temperature lower than room temperature in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an organoaluminium compound of the formula AlRnX3-n where R is an alkyl group, X represents halogen, and n is 1, 2, or 3, or a catalyst obtained by reacting one or more organometallic compounds of metals belonging to Group II and III of the Periodic Table according to Mendel<\>eeff, with one or more compounds of metals belonging to Group IVa, Va, or VIa of the Periodic Table, and/or iron. The metals of Group II and III are preferably beryllium, zinc, cadmium, and aluminium. The preferred metal compound is TiCl4. The catalyst is generally prepared in a hydrocarbon solvent and "aged". The polymerization is usually effected in an organic solvent such as n-hexane, n-heptane, benzene, toluene, cyclohexane, chloroform, or ethylene dichloride. Poly-alpha-methyl styrene in admixture with polyvinyl formal may be spun into fibres.
