A portable tufting appliance comprises a needle carried by a member slidably mounted in a housing, a pair of scissors carried by a similar member for reciprocation in a path parallel to and closely adjacent the path of movement of the needle, means mounted on the housing and driven by a motor for imparting reciprocation to said members, and cam means adapted to close the scissors at the end of each forward stroke thereof and to open the scissors during each rearward stroke thereof. A central housing 5, journalling a shaft 14, carries at its forward end a tubular housing 6 provided with a handle 9, and at its rear end a housing 1 provided with a pistol grip and containing a motor, the shaft 12 of which is coupled to shaft 14. A shaft 18, also journalled in housing 5, is coupled by gearing 16, 17 to shaft 14 and carries at its respective external ends cranks 19 linked by connecting rods 20 to respective members 21 and 22 slidably mounted in housing 6. Member 21 carries at its forward end a channel-sectioned needle 7 formed with an eye 7a, and at its inner end a block 28 from which projects forwardly a rod 29. A block 30, formed with a cam surface 31, is slidably mounted on rod 29 and is biased against an abutment 29a thereon by a spring 32. The forward end of housing 6 carries a block 35 formed with a cam surface 36. A pair of scissor blades 8a and 8b are positioned parallel to and closely adjacent the needle 7. Blade 8b has a cranked leg portion 8d which is fixed to slide member 22. Blade 8a has a leg portion 8c, the free end of which is aligned with cam surface 31, and which has a lateral projection 8e aligned with cam surface 36. In threading the yarn through the needle eye 7a, via a guide 40, shaft 14 may be turned manually by a knob 41 on an extension thereof, to facilitate the operation. In use, a foot 11 carried by the housing 6 is placed against the base fabric, the motor is started and the appliance is traversed manually. The needle passes through the base fabric to carry a loop of yarn therethrough, the open blades pass through the hole made by the needle and retain the loop while the latter retracts, the blades close in their foremost position, to cut the loop, by the reaction of extension 8e with surface 36, and the blades are opened during their return stroke by the reaction of the free end of leg 8c with surfaces 31. The depth of penetration of the blades, and hence the length of the tuft, is regulated by the setting of a stitch adjuster 38 which is adjustably fixed to slide member 22 and carries at its forward end a knurled base fabricengaging surface 39.
