Abstract
Olefin polymer compositions comprise, as stabilizer for the olefin polymer, a 1,3,5-trithiane derivative of formula:- <FORM:0937133/IV(a)/1> wherein R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are H, Cl, OCH3, OC2H5, CH3 or OH, one of them always being a hydroxyl group. The polymer may be a homopolymer or copolymer prepared by a high or low pressure process, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene-1, polyisobutylene, and copolymers of ethylene and propylene. The trithianes may be used together with known stabilizers, e.g. acetonenonyl phenol condensates. Specified trithianes are 2,4,6-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl), 2,4,6-tris(2-hydroxyphenyl), 2,4,6-tris(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl), 2,4,6-tris(4-hydroxy-3-ethoxyphenyl), 2,4,6-tris(5-chloro-2-hydroxyphenyl), 2,4,6-tris(6-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl) and 2,4,6-tris(2,4,6-trichloro - 3 - hydroxyphenyl) 1,3,5 - truthianes. Other additives mentioned are 2,6,-di t. butyl para cresol, diphenyl para phenylene diamine, N-stearyl para aminophenol, 4,41-thiobis (6-t. butyl meta cresol), 4,6-dibenzoyl resorcinol, dilauryl thiodipropionate and manganese stearate.
