Abstract

A fuel gas is made by gasifying with air and/or steam and/or oxygen a mixture of a sludge separated from industrial and domestic effluents containing solid matter which is mostly of an organic nature and dried to a water content of not more than 30% by weight with carbon and/or carbon compounds. Suitable materials for mixing with the sludge are coke, coal, coal dust, tar, pitch, oil residues and spent sulphite lye. The mixture may be briquetted with the addition of a binder and other solid industrial or household refuse may be incorporated in the mixture after a magnetic separation treatment. The effluent is first treated in a settling basin possibly with the addition of peat or sawdust to absorb colloidal, oily and tarry constituents of the effluent. The sludge from the settling basin is then mechanically dried and optionally by heating to a water content of less than 30% and preferably between 5 and 25% by weight. The amounts of carbon and/or carbon compound added to the dried sludge may be varied to produce a constant supply of gas. The gas may be burned in a gas engine or turbine to produce electrical energy and the waste combustion gases used to dry the sludge.
