Abstract

935,884. Direct lift aircraft. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Dec. 27, 1961 [Jan. 16, 1961], No. 46232/61. Class 4. A V.T.O.L. vehicle comprises a plurality of ducted fans, the lift forces developed along the axes of rotation of their rotors resolving into a vertical force passing through the centre of gravity of the vehicle, the horizontal distance between each rotor axis and the vertical axis of the vehicle increasing as these axes are extended downwards. In the Figure, the thrust vectors and rotational axes Ff 1 and Ff 2 of two forward fans intersect at a point Rf, and the thrust vectors and rotational axes Fr1 and Fr2 of two rearward fans at a point Rr. The resultant thrust vector Ftf of the forward fans and that Ftr of the rearward fans, intersect at a point Rt on the OZ axis Lv of the aircraft, the total resultant thrust vector Fvt lying along axis Lv and thus passing through the centre of gravity CG. Alternatively, all four fan thrust vectors and axes may pass through a common point on axis Lv. The fans are disposed symmetrically with respect to the OX and OY axes Ll and Lt. There may be a single forward fan.
