935,821. Washing fruit and vegetables. G. W. USHER. Sept. 24, 1959 [June 25, 1958], No. 20299/58. Class 28 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] In a machine for washing dishes, fruit and vegetables water is supplied via an inlet pipe 15, having a gap surrounded by a strainer 17 within a tank 7, to a pump 8 to be discharged through a reaction type rotary spray unit 18 on to the articles to be washed, which are contained in a tray (not shown) supported on rails 5. The pump 8 is started when the level of water in the tank 7 is raised sufficiently to close a float operated switch energizing the pump motor. The sprayed water is returned to the tank 7 via a strainer 9, and when the water overflows through pipes 14, 10 the supply to the inlet pipe 15 is cut off. To discontinue the washing operation an apertured sleeve within the outlet pipe 10 is rotated by a handle 11 to align apertures in the pipe 10 and sleeve, respectively, to drain the tank and open the float-actuated switch to stop the pump 8. The handle 11 may be adjusted to vary the rate of drainage and thus the period which elapses before the switch is opened.
