Class 2(6) Alpha-olefins are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an essentially amorphous titanium trichloride, an aluminium sesquihalide of the formula A1R 1À5 X 1À5 where R is a hydrocarbon radical, and X is selected from chlorine and bromine, and a complexing compound chosen from ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide, or amylene oxide, wherein the proportions of the components of the catalyst are, in mol. ratios, of aluminium sesquihalide to titanium trichloride of from 1:5 to 10:1, and of aluminium sesquihalide to the complexing compound of from 10:1 to 5:4. By essentially amorphous titanium trichloride is meant titanium trichloride of which the X-ray diffraction intensity is 10% or less of that observed with normally crystalline titanium trichloride. The alpha-olefin may be ethylene, propylene, butene-1, hexene-1, heptene-1, octene- 1, octadecene-1, or 4-methyl pentene-1. The exemplified aluminium compound is aluminium ethyl sesquichloride.
