Abstract

935,689. Photo-electric control of machine tools. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Dec. 30, 1959 [Jan. 1, 1959 ; Oct. 26, 1959], Nos. 53/59 and 36141/59. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XXII] In apparatus in which a machine tool for operating upon elongated workpieces by means of a pattern or template which is representative of the workpiece and which is sensed by a device during relative movement between the tool and workpiece to control operation of the tool relative to the workpiece, the pattern or template is resiliently extensible and is retained in a temporarily stretched condition corresponding to the length of the workpiece which is being operated upon. The process is described for the resurfacing by welding deposition of metal on the surfaces 15 of the links 14 of the driving chain of a caterpillar tractor by a welding head 10 laterally adjustable in a carriage 12 movable along rails 13. An arm 17 of the carriage 12 supports a detecting head 16 including a photoelectric cell which scans a pattern comprising members 20 shaped to correspond with the surfaces 15 of the links 14 and arranged to suspend the deposition of metal by the head 10 at the overlapping zones of the links. The members 20 may be black on a white background of the strip 18, or vice versa, or the members 20 may be opaque and the strip 19 transparent, or vice versa, the photo-cell 16 being responsive to reflected or transmitted light respectively. The material of the strip may be rubber or other elastic material. Alternatively, the shaped members 20 corresponding to the links 14 may be generally rigid members, such as metal plates, secured by studs 24 to the strip 18 which, preferably, at each end is provided with a clamp 22 engaged by a threaded adjustable member 23. In an alternative arrangement, Figs. 3, 4, 5 (not shown), the pattern member comprises separate shaped members corresponding to the surfaces on which metal is to be deposited and connected by spring members, the length occupied by the pattern assembly being adjustable at one or both ends. The longitudinal array of pattern members may be connected by two series of springs, the individual members of which are connected to alternate pattern members to provide greater elasticity for the composite pattern or template. The extensible pattern or template may be employed with mechanical scanning detection in lieu of photo-electric operation.
