Abstract

In pre-stressed reinforced concrete, the reinforcing rods or wires are coated with a concrete retarder to delay adhesion between the reinforcement and the surrounding concrete. The reinforcement in preferably post-tensioned, but may be pre-tensioned in which case only the end portions are coated. The reinforcement may comprise smooth wires or rods but is preferably a cable consisting of spirally wound rods. The concrete retarder, of which many examples are given, may be applied in a resinous emulsion or dispersion, or an alcohol solution of the retarder and a film-forming agent. The resinous component is water-insoluble but soluble in alkaline water in the concrete, and also serves to protect against rust. In a modification the retarder is applied in aqueous solution including a water-soluble thickening agent. Specification 405,508 is referred to.
