Abstract

A high tension resistant envelope of glass of high silica content of an electric incandescent lamp, especially one containing iodine, is coated with a protective layer of an organic compound which at working temperature is volatilized without residue, whereby devitrification of the glass due to handling is avoided. Examples of coating materials are acrylic acid esters, cellulose esters, vinyl resins, polyvinyl resins, polyacrylates and poly methacrylates especially methyl, butyl or isobutyl methacrylate and co-polymers of these. Substituted cellulose acetate, such as cellulose acetate butyrate, polystyrene, epoxy resins, polyamides such as nylon, polyurethanes and the reaction products of epichlorohydrin and bisphenol may also be used. In examples (1) ethyl cellulose or an 80:20 mixture of xylol and normal butanol; (2) methyl methacrylate in acetone; (3) isobutyl methacrylate in acetone; (4) xylol and cellulose acetate butyrate in a 75:25 ratio; and (5) polyvinyl acetate in acetone are instanced, coating being in all cases by dipping.
