Abstract

A continuous process for the preparation of an ester comprises heating an acid reactant which is less volatile than water with excess of an alcohol which is more volatile than water and the ester produced and which is capable of forming an azeotrope with water, in a reactor to which the reactants are fed separately in countercurrent flow to form an ester, passing a mixture of the vapours of the alcohol and water from the reactor to a distillation column wherein the vapours are fractionally distilled, removing any excess water from the base of the distillation column, recycling the alcohol-water azeotrope in vapour form from the head of the distillation column to the reactor at a point adjacent to that at which the acid reactant is fed thereto, removing a liquid mixture of the ester and the alcohol from the reactor, separating the ester from the alcohol and returning the separated alcohol to the distillation column. The acid reactant is a carboxylic acid, e.g. stearic, maleic, adipic, sebacic, isosebacic, phthalic, isophthalic or terephthalic acid, a carboxylic acid anhydride, e.g. phthalic or maleic anhydride, or a carboxylic ester-acid. The reactor may be in the form of a series of zones each being heated by independent heating means, and so may be similar to a bubble cap fractionating column. The alcoholwater azeotrope obtained on fractioning the vapours from the reactor may be returned to several points in the column reactor. The liquid mixture of ester and alcohol withdrawn from the reactor may be stripped of the alcohol by fractional distillation, if desired, with the aid of steam. The esterification may be effeced at 110 DEG -250 DEG C., and a catalyst may be present, e.g. sulphuric or toluene sulphonic acid. The preparation of diethyl phthalate is described in detail with reference to a suitable form of apparatus. The process described in the Provisional Specification is not restricted to the feeding of the reactants in countercurrent flow and includes the use of esters as acid reactant.
