Abstract
Polymers are derived from methylol phosphorus compounds (such as reaction products of tetrakis(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride (THPC) or tris(hydroxymethyl) phosphine oxide (THPO) with compounds capable of condensing with formaldehyde or of esterifying methanol. Suitable such compounds are (1) nitrogen compounds such as (a) urea, guanidine, melamine or methylol melamine, (b) polyamines, e.g. hexamethylene pentamine, (c) primary amines, e.g. cetylamine, cyclohexylamine, aniline, diethanolamine, (d) cyclic imines, e.g. ethylene imine, (e) polypeptides, e.g. poly(hexamethylene adipamide) or a protein, and (2) phenolic compounds. The reactants are heated in aqueous solution with ammonium sulphite or a mixture of an ammonium salt and a sulphite, with or without the addition of a buffer, e.g. sodium bicarbonate, and then treated with an aqueous ammonia system (solution of NH4OH or an ammonium salt of a weak acid which salt is readily hydrolysed, e.g. carbonate or carbamate, or mixtures of steam and ammonia gas). The heating is preferably to 85 DEG -120 DEG C., and the process may conveniently be carried out by impregnating a cellulosic material with an aqueous solution of the polymer and sulphite, heating to 85 DEG -120 DEG C. to dry it and then treating with the ammonia system followed preferably by washing, suitably in a solution of soap or detergent and H2O2 in water, rinsing in hot water, and drying, e.g. at 120 DEG C. Most of the examples relate to the impregnation of fabrics. Specifications 740,269, 761,985, 764,312, 764,313, 764,314, 775,325, 790,641 and 906,314 also are referred to.ALSO:Cellulosic textiles are filled or rendered flameresistant or rot-resistant and have their dyeing properties or lustre modified by (A) impregnating with a polymer prepared from a methylol phosphorus compound and an amino-compound or phenolic compound (see Group IV(a)) in aqueous solution containing ammonium sulphite, or a mixture of an ammonium salt and a sulphite, (B) drying by heat preferably at 85 DEG -120 DEG C. and (C) treating with an aqueous solution of ammonia or of a hydrolysable salt of ammonia and a weak acid (carbonic or carbamic) or with gaseous ammonia in steam. The solution in (A) may also contain a buffer, e.g. sodium bicarbonate. In the examples, cotton drill fabric, cotton wool, viscose, and filter-paper are treated in this way. The fabrics are usually washed in a solution of soap or detergent and hydrogen peroxide and rinsed in hot water before drying. Specifications 740,269, 761,985, 764,312, 764,313, 764,314, 775,325, 790,641 and 906,314 also are referred to.
