Abstract

The invention comprises carbamates of general formula I <FORM:0933878/IV(a)/1> wherein R1 and R2 are each hydrogen or a monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group, or R1 and R2 together form an alkylene chain containing from 4 to 8 carbon atoms, and R3 is hydrogen or a methyl group; a process for preparing these compounds in which the corresponding diol is reacted with diethyl carbonate or with phosgene in the presence of a catalyst to form the corresponding cyclic carbonate which is then reacted with ammonia or an amine <FORM:0933878/IV(a)/2> ; and therapeutic compositions having anti-convulsant and tranquillising properties containing these carbamates. An alternative method of preparation disclosed is the reaction of excess of the diol with urethane of an N-substituted urethane in the presence of a catalyst such as aluminium propoxide. In the detailed examples the amines <FORM:0933878/IV(a)/3> utilised are (1) ammonia, (2) cyclohexylamine, (3), (5) and (6) isopropylamine, and (4) piperidine. According to the Provisional Specifications the compounds of formulae I and II may contain methyl substituents other than R3, or may have a methylene bridge across the cyclohexane or cyclohexene ring. Pharmaceutical compositions, having anticonvulsant and tranquilizing properties, comprise the foregoing carbamates together with a dry solid diluent or an inert injectable solvent. The solid compositions may take the form of tablets, pills or capsules.
