Abstract
In a process of calcining and desulphurizing coke particles, particularly coke particles produced by coking heavy hydrocarbon oils, the particles are maintained as a fluidized bed in a calcining zone wherein they are heated to a temperature between 1300 DEG and 1900 DEG F. by applying to the bed a suitable electrical voltage and whereby a hot hydrogen-containing gaseous stream of expelled volatile matter is liberated and employed in a separate fluidized desulphurization zone maintained at a temperature between 1300 DEG and 1500 DEG F. The sulphur content of the treated coke is less than 3% by weight. In the apparatus shown green coke is fed by line 317 to a desulphurization zone 310 and desulphurized coke particles pass via line 329 to an electrically heated calcination zone 311. <PICT:0932956/III/1> Hydrogen containing gas liberated in zone 311 passes into zone 310 by line 316 and calcined and desulphurized coke particles are withdrawn through pipe 330. Gas leaving the desulphurization zone may be recycled to the calcination zone after being cooled, freed from hydrogen sulphide and compressed. In a modification the green coke is fed first to the calcination zone.
