932,355. Separating apparatus. ROSE, DOWNS & THOMPSON Ltd. Dec. 27, 1961 [Sept. 27, 1960], No. 45157/61. Divided out of 932,354. Class 117. A vertical separator for removing solids from solid containing liquids has a vertically disposed conveyer 26 comprising a worm 28 rotatably mounted in a rotatable sleeve 30 surrounded by a stationary casing 32 which conveyer extracts material from the peripheral regions of a tank 2, provided with heaters 4, and carries the solids upwards whilst allowing the liquids to return to the tank 2. The worm 28 and sleeve 30 are rotated at different speeds so that the solid material is forced, by centrifugal action, against the sleeve 30 and moved upwardly to a chamber 44, provided with a discharge opening 46, whilst the liquid is returned to the tank 2 through an annular space formed between the worm 28 and the central shaft on which the worm 28 is mounted. The solid material and liquid are mixed in the tank 2 by a drum 58 or paddles rotated by a motor 34. The motor 34 also rotates the worm 28 and sleeve 30 through belts 36, 38. One or more baffles or accelerators 50 may be provided within the tank 2 to lead the material into the bottom of the separator 26.
