Apparatus for determining the most economical way of cutting a length of material (e.g. rolled steel) into a number of smaller pieces of various required lengths comprises a channel with end stops, at least one of which is adjustable, and members, corresponding in length to the required lengths, which may be placed end to end in the channel. The channel may be associated with a graduated scale and the adjustable stop may be positioned automatically. The channel is preferably formed with a V-groove and the members are preferably of semi-circular crosssection. A second channel may be arranged alongside.
