Abstract

930,892. Supplying liquid fuel to burners. DOWTY FUEL SYSTEMS Ltd. April 19, 1960 [April 20, 1959], No. 13423/59. Class 75 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] A fuel supply system for a spill nozzle 6 of a gas turbine engine comprises a fuel entry passage including a heat-exchanger 28 and a flowmeter 36, and a spill passage extending through the heat-exchanger 28 in heat-exchange relation with the entry passage and connected to the entry passage downstream of the flowmeter 36. The spill fuel heats the entry fuel before the latter passes through the flowmeter 36. The spill fuel is divided into two parts, one part passing along a pipe 25 to the heat-exchanger 28 and the other part passing along a pipe 26 and through a valve 42 to by-pass the heat-exchanger. The valve 42 operates to maintain constant the temperature of the entry fuel leaving the heat-exchanger and comprises a metal bellows 44 connected by a pipe 46 to a temperature sensing bulb 47 located in the entry fuel. The flow of spill fuel is controlled by a valve 14 actuated by a servo piston 17 disposed in a cylinder 18 and responsive to the pressure difference across a restriction 21 in a fuel flow vent path controlled by a control unit having a valve-actuated by signals received from an engine speed governor, an air fuel ratio control and a minimum fuel flow control. The heatexchanger includes a passage through which passes lubricating oil from the engine. A second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), includes a main pump supplying fuel to a circulating system comprising a circulating pump connected to the entry and spill passages of a spill nozzle. The main pump may be connected to either the entry or the spill passages. A flowmeter is disposed upstream of the main pump and a heat-exchanger is disposed upstream of the flowmeter. Part of the spill oil passes through the heat-exchanger and returns to the circulating system. The main pump may be of fixed displacement with its delivery controlled by a by-pass valve, or it may be a variable displacement pump or it may be a centrifugal pump controlled by throttling of the delivery passage.
