[Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVIII] A speed measuring apparatus utilizes a twophase driven generator feeding an electric measuring instrument in which a rotor of hysteretic material is axially rotatable against a torque spring within a pair of coils concentric with the axis, embraced by bundles of ferromagnetic laminations aligned with the axis and uniformly spaced peripherally around coils, so that the respective lamination bundles embracing one coil are relatively staggered along the periphery with respect to those embracing the other coil. In Fig. 2, a biphase generator comprises identical parallel peripheral coils 14, embraced by alternate J-shaped and Z-shaped bundles of laminations 16, 17 at intervals of a pole pitch, and 14<SP>1</SP> is embraced by U-shaped bundles of laminations 15 at intervals of a pole pitch but T staggered peripherally by - with regard to 2 16, 17. A ring 21 of soft magnetic material encircles the outside edges of the lamination bundles and a multipole permanent magnet rotor 22 having the same width as coil 14<SP>1</SP> and registering therewith is rotatable by an input shaft 23 coaxial with the coils, which develop biphase quadrature signals of frequency representing the input speed to energize identical parallel peripheral coils 2, 2 of a frequency measuring instrument (Fig. 1) respectively embraced by alternate J-shaped and L-shaped bundles of laminations 3, 4. A ring 12 of soft magnetic material encircles the outside edges of the lamination bundles, and a rotor 5 peripherally covered with hysteretic material 26 is pivoted to rotate coaxially of the coils with its edges 27, 28 opposite the arms 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> of the laminations against a restoring spring 6, and deflects a speed indicating pointer 11, in response to the hysteretic torque produced in the layer 26 by the rotating field of the laminations 3, 4 due to the quadrature energization of coils 2, 2<SP>2</SP>. Reversal of the rotation of the input shaft reverses the sense of the field rotation and thus the direction of deflection of the pointer about a centre zero.
