Abstract
930,543. Fibrous fabrics; laminates. W. E. RAWSON Ltd. March 8, 1960 [March 10, 1959], No. 8166/59. Classes 42 (2) and 140. A method of bonding fibrous webs to produce batting, padding, filling or stuffing material consists in feeding and laminating upon a continuously moving lattice or conveyer which runs at right angles to the feeding and laminating mechanism a web or webs from a carding or similar machine, treating both sides of the web (webs) with a bonding agent immediately prior to or simultaneously with laminating and thereafter passing the laminated material by means of the lattice or conveyer through a drying chamber to cause the laminations to adhere. In the arrangement shown a web 1 from a carding engine 2 passes to a lapping mechanism 3 arranged at right-angles to a power-driven lattice 4. Mounted on each side of the mechanism 3 are gangs of spray nozzles 5 for spraying liquid bonding agent on to the web. The lattice 4 feeds the superposed layers of web 1 towards drying means 6. The web may be compressed a predetermined amount by adjustable roller 8 in conjunction with a table 9. A further pressure roller may be provided on the output side of the drying chamber 6 and longitudinal and/or transverse cutting-wheels may be provided to cut the web into strips or rectangular blocks. A layer 17 of paper, fabric, foil, or the like may be fed on to the lattice 4 under the web 1 and a similar layer may be fed on to the upper side of the web 1. The drying apparatus may include infra-red heaters. The bonding agent may comprise a natural or synthetic resin or a vulcanized or unvulcanized rubber latex and may be foamed. Material made with the unvulcanized rubber latex may be shaped by moulding to a predetermined contour.
