Abstract
930,316. Glass-blowing machines. OWENSILLINOIS GLASS CO. Oct. 27, 1959, No. 36302/59. Class 56. When forming a blown glass article from a parison formed in a parison mould and then transferred to a blow mould, the distribution of glass in the walls of the article is controlled by applying a gaseous cooling medium to the parison at its place of formation from diametrically opposite sides in a circumferentially encompassing pattern extending over a selected vertically defined external surface area of the parison, the application of the cooling medium being continued during at least part of the transfer of the parison to the blow mould. In an Owens-type machine, Fig. 4, the blank head 50 carries pins 131, 132 for locating a neck mould 51 and below them a blank mould or, subsequently, a blow mould 74. The pins are hollow and supplied with air which emerges through holes 150 to cool a selected portion of the parison determined by the number and distribution of the holes and the direction in which they are formed in the pins 131, 132. In an arrangement, such as shown, using a double mould, a central hollow pin, located between the two parisons, is also used. No air can reach the parison when either mould is closed as it then encloses the pin. The air supply may additionally be controlled by valves, one for each head of the machine on the rotating structure, operated by a cam on the stationary part. The air from each valve is fed to a distribution box in which adjustable needle valves control the relative strength of the blasts supplied to the various locating pins. Cooling air may also supply to the inside of the parison. Part of a press and blow machine is shown in Fig. 12. The parison mould 172 is charged with molten glass and moved up by a cylinder 176 to engage a neck mould 171 located on a head 170 by pins 131, 132 while a plunger 173 descends and forces the glass to the neck mould. The parison mould 172 is then removed and replaced by-the blow mould 177 actuated by a cylinder 178. As before, the pins 131, 132 are hollow and air is fed to them. They also locate both the parison and blow moulds. In the press and blow machine shown in Fig. 13 the head 187 carries pins which locate a neck mould 185 and a blank mould which is charged through a hole 182. This hole is then closed by a plunger 183 while a plunger 184 moves up into the mould. The plungers and the blank mould are removed while the head, the neck mould and the parison are swung about the pivot 189 to engage the blow mould 190. As before, an air blast, supplied to the hollow pins 131, 132 acts on the parison during the transfer. U.S.A. Specification 1,185,687 is referred to.
