929,985. 6-Methylene-steroids. BRITISH DRUG HOUSES Ltd. Nov. 3, 1961 [Nov. 7. 1960], No. 39535/61. Divided out of 929,983. Class 2(3). The invention comprises 6-methylene-3- oxo-#<SP>4</SP>-steroids and the preparation thereof by treating a 3-enol ether of a 6-hydroxymethyl steroid wih an acidic reagent. Such treatments include solution of the steroid in acetic acid followed by dilution with water, treatment with catalytic quantities of acids such as toluene p-sulphonic acid in solvents such as dioxan, treatment with sulphuric acid in ethanol and treatment with Lewis acids in acetone. A large number of examples are provided and an extensive list of starting materials and groups which may be present therein is given. These groups are the same as those detailed in Specification 929,983. Specification 929,984 also is referred to.
