Abstract

929,552. Change-speed control. WILLIAM ASQUITH Ltd. July 16, 1959, No. 24432/59. Class 80 (2). In a pre-selective control for change-speed gears in lathes and horizontal boring and milling machines, changes are effected by at least one hydraulic servomotor 13 which is controlled by a manual pre-selector valve 12 and a manual executive switch 27, the closure of which de-energizes and brakes a driving motor 10 and brings into circuit a governor switch 15 which is inoperative until the motor speed falls to a predetermined level when it energizes a solenoid valve 18 to connect the servomotor 13 to a source of pressure fluid 30 for gear establishment and releases the motor brake. Electrical means comprising switches 23, 24, 25 respectively actuated at each gear ratio by an extension 26 of the servomotor piston and a switch 29 actuated by the valve 12 returns the motor to its normal speed only on engagement of a pre-selected gear and indicates the engagement by a lamp 20. The motor 10 may be reversible, as shown, and controlled by a switch 14 effecting motor stopping, starting and reversing independent of the change speed control ; or the motor may be non-reversible with mechanical reversing means such as clutches and alternative gears associated with the change speed gear. An interlock, a solenoid of which is energized with the motor contactors, prevents actuation of the switch 27 when the machine is stationary. A manually or automatically actuated inching button is provided to rotate the gears in the event of clashing during gear change.
