Abstract

928,661. Cooling reactors. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Sept. 21, 1961 [Oct. 28, 1960], No. 37221/60. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] A pump comprises means for injecting a spray of liquid into a duct so as to create a flow of gas or vapour in a required direction, the pump being such that it produces a volume flow ratio of the gas to the driving liquid of at least 100 to 1. Steam from a nuclear reactor 30 passes via conduit 32 to a heat exchanger 33 where it vaporizes and superheats water condensate from a turbine which passes through pipe 34, feed water heater 34a, flow path 33b, drum 33d and super heating coil 33c. The superheated steam passes through conduit 35 to a sonic or supersonic nozzle 36a of ejector 36 where it entrains steam from heat exchanger 33. After reactor shut down a small cooling flow of steam e.g. 2% of the normal flow is maintained through reactor 30, conduit 32, ejector 36 and pipe 12 by means of water delivered to an atomizing nozzle 15, from an electrical pump 17. A foraminate plate 24 separates chamber 14 and sump 20, the latter having an overflow pipe controlled by a float-controlled valve 23. The condensate is re-circulated by pump 17. In a modification the pump is combined as a unit with the ejector 36. The water pipe 16, Fig. 4, may be connected to deliver to an annular atomizing nozzle surrounding a smaller steam orifice of a nozzle as described in Specification 926,616. Steam from conduit 35 is led via passage 43 to orifice 42a and via tube 42 to the orifice in element 41. Tube 42 has a ring 46 slidably mounted on it through a sleeve 48 and bellows 47. Ring 46 and sleeve 48 form the pintle of a water atomizing nozzle, the water being fed from pipe 16 to the space between sleeve 48 and tubular part 44. When water under pressure is fed to the space, the ring 46 moves to the right forming the atomizing orifice with the chamfered end of part 44. Specification 907,708 also is referred to.
