Abstract

928,211. Seat adjustments. ANDERSON CO. Feb. 17, 1961 [Feb. 19, 1960], No. 5904/61. Class 52 (2). [Also in Group XXV] A seat adjuster for controlling the position of a pivoted back 12 relative to a seat 10 comprises a telescopic stay 35 fastened at its one end to the back 12 and at its other end to a bracket 29 fixed to the seat 10, the stay 35 comprising a nut 40 and screw 42 (Fig. 3), brake means operatively engaging the screw 42 for preventing rotation of the screw and for preventing the back 12 from moving to the horizontal position, and means for releasing the brake means so that the screw 42 is manipulatable for adjusting the back 12 between a vertical and a horizontal position. The stay 35 consists of an elongate tubular member 37 pivotally connected by a bracket 38 to the back 12 and of a bifurcated support member 51 axially aligned with and spaced from the tubular member 37. The member 51 is pivotally supported on the bracket 29 and also pivots on an actuating rod 53. A cup-shaped member 58 slides in the member 51 and is urged away from the tubular element 37 by a spring 68. The rod 53 has a cam-shaped portion 72 for bearing against the outer face of the member 58. The screw 42 has an unthreaded end 54 extending into the member 58. A brake disc 81 is keyed to the screw 42. A spring 49 in the tubular element 37 urges the screw towards the support member 51. The rod 53 is rotatable by a handle 77 for urging the brake disc 81 into braking engagement with the end face 85 of the member 51 to prevent relative rotation between the screw 42 and the member 51. The handle 77 is also used to release the brake disc. In operation, with the back 12 in a vertical position and with the rod 53 in the position shown in Fig. 3, any clockwise pressure against the back 12 urges the screw 42 with the braking disc 81 against the end 85 of the non-rotatable support 51 to thereby prevent any rearward movement of the back 12. Rotation of the rod 53 by the handle 77 to the position shown in Fig. 4 will force the cup member 58 and the screw 42 axially of the support 51 against the force of the spring 68 so as to raise the brake disc 81 from the end 85 of the support whereby any clockwise pressure on the back 12 urges a plate 46 against the end of the screw 42 to rotate the screw until the handle 77 is released or a part of the nut 40 engages with a stop washer 87 on the screw 42. With the brake 81 released the back 12 can be moved in either a clockwise or a counter-clockwise direction between the limits of movement provided by the stop 87 or stop pin 103 on the screw 42. Pressure on the seat in a counter-clockwise direction will raise the seat whether or not the brake 81 is in the looking position shown in Fig. 3.
