Abstract
The invention comprises theophylline derivatives of the general formula: T.CH2CH2.NH.CHR.CH(OH).R1, in which T is the 7-theophyllinyl radical, R is hydrogen or methyl and R1 an oxyaryl radical, particuluarly m- or p-hydroxyphenyl or 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl, and non-toxic salts thereof, together with a process for their preparation by the catalytic hydrogenation of ketones of the formula T.CH2CH2.NH.CHR.CO.R1, in which T, R and R1 are as above or R1 may also be a benzyloxyaryl radical. The hydrogenation may be carried out stepwise when R1 is benzyloxyaryl, the first step being hydrogenolysis of the benzyl groups, e.g. using a palladium catalyst, followed by the second step of reducing the keto group, preferably with a platinum or palladium catalyst at a higher temperature. The ketones themselves are prepared by condensation of 7-(b -amino-ethyl) theophylline with a haloketone of formula X.CHR.CO.R1, in which X is preferably chlorine or bromine.
