927,846. Washing machines. C. I. A. ELLIS. Feb.16, 1961 [Nov.19, 1959], No. 39203/59. Class 138 (2). The alkalinity of liquid within a washing machine is continuously determined and compared with pre-selected standards, the results of these comparisons being utilised automatically to control the washing cycle throughout its duration. As shown, a washing machine 1 is supplied with water, detergent, alkali and steam through electropneumatically controlled valves 4, 5, 6, 7 which are governed by a series of electrodes or probes 12, a foam detector (not shown), a device 2 and temperature-sensitive device 14 respectively, through a control device 3. Device 2 may be a pair of electrodes inserted in the walls of the washing vessel, the electric current flowing between them being a measure of the alkali in the water. A device 17, similar to device 2, may be inserted in the water pipe 8 to permit comparison of the alkalinity of the water in the machine with that in the pipe during the rinsing process. Electrodes 12 are placed at different depths in a tank 13, one pair being selected according to the depth of water required. The foam detector is repeatedly charged with samples of liquid from the machine, the height of the column of foam produced therein being detected by electrodes or photo-electric means. A uni-selector or similar device may be used to control the number of washes for each load.
