Abstract
927,641. Testing crushing strength. STAMICARBON N.V. March 10, 1960 [March 13, 1959; June 16, 1959], No. 8522/60. Class 106 (2). Apparatus for testing crushing strengths of pieces of material 3, e.g. agglomerated fuel pieces, comprises a fixed pressing member 1 and a reciprocatable pressing member 2 operated by pressure on a piston 5 in a cylinder 6 containing oil 7. Compressed air is supplied through valves 16 and according to the position of the piston 17 in a valve 15 raises or lowers the piston 5. In the position shown compressed air is applied to the surface 8 of the oil 7 and the member 2 applies pressure to an ovoid 3. When the ovoid is crushed a control-rod operates a valve 13 causing movement of piston 17 so that the piston 5 is raised until the control-rod 12 operates a valve 14. This causes movement of piston 17 to the position shown in Fig. 1 and piston 5 is again lowered. The ovoids 3 are placed in a channel 21, Fig. 3, in the member 1 between spaced fingers 20. Each upward movement of the piston 5 causes a control-rod 29, wedge 18, rod 27, ratchet-wheel 25 and shaft 28 to rotate the fingers and bring an uncrushed ovoid to the position below member 2. The crushed ovoid is swept away by the fingers and may be disposed of through an aperture 22 in the member 1. In an alternative construction, Fig. 6, the ovoids 3 are placed on members 5 hinged to the fingers and crushed ovoids are discharged when the member 5 passes over an aperture 10 and swings downwards.
