Abstract

A polymerization catalyst comprises a compound of a metal of Group I, II or III of the Periodic Table according to Mendel<\>aeeff in which the metal is bound to nitrogen atoms and in which no metal-to-carbon or covalent metal-to-hydrogen bonds are present, together with a compound of a transition metal of Group IV, V, VI, VII or VIII of the Table. Preferred compounds are those having the general formula Xn Me [N (R1 R2)]m wherein Me is beryllium, lithium, magnesium or aluminium, R1 and R2 are the same or different and represent alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or alkylaryl groups or, conjointly with the nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring, X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, n is zero or an integer, m is an integer, and n+m is the valency of the metal Me. Specified compounds are: aluminium-tris (diphenylamide), magnesium diphenylamide bromide, aluminium bis (diphenylamide) chloride, magnesium (diethylamide) bromide, aluminium tris (N-carbazyl), aluminium bis (diphenylamide) bromide, aluminium bis (diethylamide) monochloride, aluminium tris diethylamide, bis (magnesium iodide) phenylamide, and aluminium nitride. The second compound may be TiCl3, CoCl3, Ti(OC3H7)4, CrCl3 or VCl3.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst comprises a compound of a metal of Group I, II or III of the Periodic Table according to Mendel<\>aeef in which the metal is bound to nitrogen atoms and in which no metal-to-carbon or covalent metal-to-hydrogen bonds are present, together with a compound of a transition metal of Group IV, V, VI, VII or VIII of the Table. The second compound may be TiCl3, CoCl3, Ti(OC3H7)4, CrCl3 or VCl3. The catalyst may be used for the polymerization of ethylene, propylene or butadiene.ALSO:Magnesium diphenylamide bromide is reacted with AlCl3 to give aluminium trisdiphenylamide. The latter compound may be reacted with AlCl3 to give aluminium bis(diphenylamide) chloride, or with AlBr3 to give the corresponding bromide. Aluminium tris-diethylamide is prepared from AlCl3 and magnesium diethylamide bromide; the product may be reacted with AlCl3 to give aluminium bis(diethylamide) chloride. Aluminium tris(N-carbazyl) is prepared from AlEt3 and carbazole.
